quick tips for telling your story

Have you ever heard me say “your story matters”? If not, well maybe you’re new to my website, because I say it all the time! And it does—I truly believe that your story matters. Even if you think “oh, my life is so boring” or “no one is going to want to listen to what I have to say” or even the infamous “no one cares,” you’re wrong! Because your story is shaping the future, and the only way we can all learn about it, grow through it, and experience your truth is by hearing your story. So, let’s say it again, your story matters.

Now, the reason I’m really hammering down on this is because today I’ve got some quick times about telling your story. And honestly, this blog post is about diving right in. If you’re not telling your story yet, here are some quick tips for you!

make mistakes

Making mistakes is the only way you can tell your story. So many people are going to wait to start a scrapbook, hold off on beginning a youtube channel, or basically just put whatever it is they plan to do to tell their story off because it’s not perfect yet. But here’s the newsflash we all need—its never going to be perfect! So start now, make mistakes, and get it out there.

I have a season 1 episode on The Memories Podcast all about Getting Started with Memory Keeping. (I know I haven’t updated the podcast in a minute, but it’s coming!) You can listen to that episode here.

be authentic

Did I mention that your story is important? And your story is uniquely you. In today’s society with social media, and youtube, and tv, and all forms of comparison, it’s hard to focus on being authentic. But your story is worth being told in a way that truly lets it shine. And I am a firm believer that the only way your personal story can shine is by being uniquely you and authentic to who you are.

do it for you first

My last quick tip should really be the kick in the pants that you need… do it for you first. This means, don’t tell your story for someone else to watch or listen to, do it for you. While that’s important (and it’ll come in time), first start by simply documenting your story because YOU want to. Do it because YOU need to—not because I’m telling you to. Do it because it’s important to you, and worry about sharing it later.

Doing it for you first can be something as simple as a personal journal that no one is going to read. It can be easy like hiring a professional photographer to take your family pictures once a year. But do it because you matter.
