Meet Marsha | Blogger Series

Food blogs, lifestyle blogs, blogs about blogs, blogs about your faith--there is no limit to the types of things that a blog can be written about. People are finding new and creative way to express themselves every day. Blogs have helped people over come fears, find what they believe in, and become a better person. Blogging changes lives, and that's what this series is all about!

Meet Marsha!

First off, tell us a little bit about yourself and your blog.

I'm a Christian wife and mom. I'm an avid, yet average, runner and cyclist. I have a master's degree in counseling. I blog about faith and fitness with a little of this and that sprinkled in from time to time. My blog is geared towards women who are tired of gimmicks and quick fixes and who are ready to be empowered to find their own paths. There are also pieces that speak to runners and how running and life intersect.

What inspired you to start blogging?

I started blogging, because I found myself making long posts on social media. I was getting positive response from the posts but felt that having a blog was a better platform than writing several words and paragraphs on a Facebook or Instagram post.

How did you got where you are?

I've struggled with weight and body image since I was a young girl. I've cried WAY too many tears over a number on a scale. And looking back, there has never been a time in my life when I was overweight. Sure, there's always a few pounds to lose or places to tighten up, but I've never been obese or considered "heavy" by anyone's standards. It was just a complex that began way too early and I've struggled with forever.

In college I toyed with binging and purging both with exercise and with laxatives. I've done all kinds of diets, pills, etc. Having been a Christ follower most of my life (I accepted Him and was baptized when I was 9), I have given Him this struggle, taken it back, given to Him, taken it back, and so on! It's the one thing that I know draws me to Him on a daily basis, because I can't do this alone. The struggle has always been more in my head than in my physical body. I exercise, I eat most of the right things, but it never seems good enough.

When I turned 40, I read "Made to Crave", and in it the story of the Israelites is highlighted, and God told Moses "you have circled this mountain long enough, now turn north." So at 40 I turned north! But I have had phases when I take control or I think I need to try a different diet plan or pill. Finally I decided to join an online challenge group. I got rid of all the gimmicks and pills in my cabinet. Daily workouts have never a problem for me. Being in a group with Sisters in Christ, encouraging, and holding each other accountable, was a great thing for me. It got my focus away from myself, more fully on Him and what He has already done in my life. It also gave me the avenue to begin sharing my story, and I saw that my sharing could have a positive impact on other women. I wanted to step out and take it to more women.

What do you hope to achieve with your blog?

I want to share with women how to be fit and free at the same time. I want the message to go out that they are "fearfully and wonderfully made". I want every woman to learn how to "keep her eyes on her own paper".

How has blogging changed your life?

Blogging has made me more vulnerable. It's kept me accountable. It's grown me. I've learned about myself and about others. It's become a space to learn and grow and also has confirmed my purpose and passion.

As always, I want to give a BIG thank you to Marsha for blogging here today! She has such an amazing story to tell that I hope can touch your heart and inspire many more. Please don't forget to check out her blog and let her know that you found her via Danyell Bailey's Blog--I'm sure she'd love that!

Recap of 2015 + Reader Survey

As 2016 is fast approaching, it is common for bloggers to begin taking a look at what worked and what didn't and reflect on how this past year went. Now is the time to make changes like: updating your look, changing your posting schedule, experimenting with something new, and more! I am excited to continue growing this blog.

I've gotten a lot of new followers this year! Welcome--it is fabulous to have you here. I figured I'd start out this post with a little story about my blogging journey.

My Blogging Journey

I started my blog my freshman year of college as a way to stay connected with friends and family. Shortly after starting my blog I fell in love with everything going on in this new online world and changed my major from psychology/counseling to Informatics (aka computer science) with a focus in psychology and marketing. Blogging changed my life in that it changed my career path, my ideas about the world, and who I am right this moment. Blogging has brought about a whole new person in me, and I absolutely love who I've become.

My blog has undergone a lot of different transitions. And most everything I learned about blogging I learned through Danyzell's Blog! This was my first blog--my baby! I haven't had the courage to delete it yet, so it's still visible on the internet, but all of those memories of creating the design, learning how to express myself, and figuring out everything about a blog makes me never want to take it down.

On March 20, 2015 I officially launched Danyell Bailey's Blog (this blog you are on right now)! I needed something new, fresh, and clean, and this blog gave me the opportunity to grow up and change. You can read more about my move here.

Besides my own blogs, I have been blogging for sites like WeAreIU, IT Training Tips, The New Blak, and other occasional quest posts. I have met a lot of amazing people, and learned so much that sometimes I think my mind is going to explode. This journey has been a good one, it has given me many great opportunities, and it is one that I never want to stop riding on.

I love making changes to my blog that positively affect the reader experience. Making sure that your readers are having the best time on your site is going to ensure that more and more people turn into avid followers. To help me do this, I have put together a nice reader survey. I want to hear what you all have to say! Please, please, please take the time to fill it out and give me your input. I really appreciate it.

My best posts.

Finals Week Outfits

What's the perfect combination between casual and cute? When the time to take finals rolls around you're going to want to be comfy, warm, and confident. For me, I like to still look cute (because it gives me confidence) yet be able to slump back and relax as I trudge away on test for the next two hours. Read more here!

How To Create a Blogging Schedule

Some people may like to go with the flow and blog when they please. But that's not me. I like to have everything planned out ahead of time. While I sometimes might not get everything posted that I had intended to, I still like the idea of having everything ready to go. Each month I have a theme for my blog and this month's theme is planning--so, why not talk about how I plan out my blog posts. Read more here!

How to Plan for a Day of Working from Home

Working from home is becoming more common. Technology has aided us in getting everything done that we need to from the comfort of our bed and our pajamas. Did you know that 30 million people work from a home office at least once a week? That's totally awesome. Staying focused while working from home can be a little tricky at first, but once you figure out your system you're good to go. Read more here!

Paper vs. Digital

This is an issue that I've struggled with a lot in the past. As I try to get a grasp on an organized life I've struggled with the idea of whether writing something down or typing it onto an online document in the cloud is better. Should I use a paper planner or a digital planner? Read more here!

How to Add Hours to Your Day

Making the most of the time you have to accomplish things everyday is a huge factor to how you will feel about yourself. Getting things done, especially right in the morning, increases productivity throughout the entire rest of your day and week! Read more here!

How to Make Your Business Stand Out on Social Media

Using social media as a business and using it as a personal user is not very different! No matter what platform you are using, whether it be Pinterest, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, or anything else, the things that a business needs to do to stand out are very similar to the things a personal user will need to do in order to stand out. What It's Like Living With Migraines

I've been away for a long time. And being away kills me. I love blogging and social media-ing (yeah, I know it's not a verb, but I just made it one!), so forcing myself to take a break from the online world slightly was a bit of a challenge. As horrible as it was, I needed to take a break--I had started getting migraines very frequently. Since 7th grade I've suffered from regular migraines; the type of migraines that cause me to lose my vision, speak weird, and feel completely unlike myself. When I get a migraine it shuts me down and there is really nothing I can do about it. Read more here!

Thank you to all of my family, friends, followers, and passerbys! I appreciate every single one of you. I love you to the moon and back. Please don't forget to fill out my reader survey, and have a wonderful holiday season!!

How Blogging Can Lead to Freelance Work

This past year, I've talked a lot about what this online world can do for people, what it can do for your business, and how it can impact everyone's life. I've met some amazing people who know so much about blogging, businesses, and social media. One of those people is Lizzie--I've invited her today to talk about her freelance work, please welcome Lizzie to this amazing community with open arms.

I’m a freelance writer by trade, but it all began with a blog.

Back in 2012, I wanted a space where I could write about my travel escapades and share them with family and friends.

Pretty soon, I’d discovered a community of like-minded individuals, and my posts started to reach more and more people. This was mind-boggling considering I had only set up my site so I could access my stories and memories several years down the line.

After about a year of blogging, I started getting emails from brands and companies who wanted to work with me. Most of the time they just wanted a cheeky link bank (which I said no to – at that point, I wasn’t interested in monetizing my site), but there were a few that were actually interested in my writing style and my voice (just little old me!).

At that time, I was working a full-time job and had never considered blogging as a way of making money. I’d dreamt of going freelance and working for myself; adopting my own hours and working on projects that interested me, but it just seemed like a pipe dream.

That was, until I started getting offers to write for brands on a regular basis.

I suddenly thought, “hang on a minute, maybe there’s something in this.” I was getting between 5 and 10 emails a week from companies, and I was quickly building up my list of connections in the travel industry.

The interest in my work gave me the validation I needed to start pitching travel sites with articles (you know, travel sites that actually paid for pieces), and I even plucked up the courage to enter National Geographic’s Young Travel Writer of the Year award. I was absolutely speechless when I came second, but it really gave me the kick I needed.

The dream of working for myself and using my words to reach people wasn’t so far down the pipeline as I thought.

And it all began with a blog.

If I had never set up my free Wordpress site that day in January 2012, I’d never have opened myself up to the opportunities that flooded in. I’d never have found a community of likeminded people. I’d never have even considered entering a writing competition by National Geographic. And, most importantly, I’d never have had the courage to quit my full-time job to give freelancing a go.

But guess what? It all paid off.

Those few years of slogging away with the blog, of making connections and pitching articles, were so worth it because now I’m living the life I want, working with clients I love, and setting my own schedule.

A blog is such a great tool for freelancers for a number of reasons (not just because you can write about anything you want when you’re often confined to the brief of a client!).

Blogging Can Lead to Freelancing Because…

It Improves Your Craft

So many brands these days are looking for web content – whether it’s blog posts, copy, or online feature pieces.

Before I started blogging, I had no idea how a post should be formatted, what a good headline looked like, or how many words I needed to keep people interested.

After a couple of years learning the ins and outs of blogging, I was soon buffed up on all things SEO and online content. But having a blog also meant I was writing regularly for an actual audience, not just the pages of my paper journal.

I soon learned what posts people liked to read, found a voice that fitted my niche, and learned how to glean inspiration from the strangest of places.

I’d added to my skillset without taking a course or gaining a qualification. I’d added to my skillset by pure experience, and that’s often the most important thing when you’re freelancing.

It Acts as a Portfolio

When I first started submitting articles and pitching brands for freelance work, I didn’t have many published articles to show them.

Or so I thought.

In actual fact, I had almost 200 pieces to pick and choose from to show them – all from my blog.

Even though you haven’t written to a brief, your blog posts are still written for an audience, and they’re a great judge of your voice and how well you can write.

Since then, I’ve used posts from my blog thousands of times as portfolio pieces – and I still use them today, even when I have a whole host of other published articles under my belt.

It Creates Industry Connections

Blogging often goes hand in hand with social media and online networking, whether it’s with peers in your niche or brands that have the same audience as you.

Over the years, I created tons of connections with brands in destinations I’d visited, individuals I’d met at in-person networking events, and online friends I’d met through Twitter or Facebook groups.

While it might seem like having these connections is just a bonus of running a blog, they can actually be pivotal in getting you freelance work.

Think about it: that brand who’s Tweet you just shared? Maybe they’re looking for a blog writer. That fellow blogger you had a conversation with on Facebook the other day? They might know someone who is looking for a freelancer.

Having a blog is such a fun hobby to have, but it can also be a fantastic tool for landing freelance work. Just remember to keep creating connections, only publish your best work, and try to improve your craft with every single post.

Hey, if I can do it – so can you!

Tea Time No. 004

This past week I finished off my second to last semester of college ever. It was probably the hardest semester that I have ever had and the last time I will ever have to really focus on school work. My final spring semester should be cake! I can't wait,

Monday
You can find me a Barnes & Nobel cramming for my test on Tuesday. I thought the test was on Thursday, but boy was I in for a rude awakening when I realized the actual date. That meant that literally all of my time today was spent entire on re-reading, going over slides, and preparing myself for this dreaded test. Thank god I am done with my psychology minor after this class.

Tuesday
Even though my test is today, I still have other things I have to focus on. I have to work, meet with a brand new client, and prepare myself for a talk I'm giving over Google Hangout tomorrow. The stress level of this week is through the roof.

Wednesday
Okay, so now I've got a little bit of a break. I really really need to just sleep all day, but I made a commitment that I can't back down on. I'm actually really excited to be talking to my old high school about portfolios. They really are a great way to make your work shine!!

Thursday
One last test and I'm done. I didn't need to spend practically any time prepping for this test today. It's a Database Relations course, and I've got this down!! I think that I'll do fine (especially since we are allowed to have an entire notecard worth of notes after all).

Friday
I have never had such a big sigh of relief as I've had today. I gave myself lots of much needed time to watch some Netflix in my jammies on the couch, catch up on some reading, and update my blog for the next week.

P.S. All of the images above come from Instagram!!

Meet Melody | Blogger Series

As blogging continues to become more and more popular, I've had the opportunity to meet so many people. There are people who blog about life, food, fashion, business, and so much more. I love seeing what everyone has to say about their own personal blogging journey, and that's what this series is all about!

Meet Melody!

First off, tell us a little bit about yourself and your blog.

Hi-ya! My name is Melody! I am self-improvement enthusiast, a blogger (at www.marevoli.com), and expat currently living in South Korea. I am a proud INFP, a natural haired free-spirited Gemini/Cancer cusp baby who is prefers to swim in the deep end. I choose to live my life with the belief that we all owe it to ourselves to live a passion-fueled life. Although this means something different to everyone, I aim to inspire others to take steps toward their dreams and to believe in their awesome.

What inspired you to start blogging?

I originally started to blog because I wanted to have an outlet to express myself. I always admired those who were able to express themselves online—whether it was YouTube, blogging, or photography. After years of thinking about it but taking no action, I realized that the only thing holding me back was fear—I was scared of what people would think. During the summer of 2013, I decided to finally register with WordPress and see what happened. Fast forward to the present, I’ve changed my blog’s name, found my niche, found amazing supporters, and am still enjoying the self-expression and community that the blogosphere provides.

How did you got where you are?

It’s been a long journey! As I mentioned above, I started my blog in 2013 and with a totally different concept. In the beginning, I mostly wrote music reviews and talked about food. After a few months, I realized I was aching to write about things of more depth. I wanted an outlet to express how I was truly feeling about the things going on in my life. I wanted an outlet to openly decipher what it all meant. So in 2014, I decided to do just that. I wrote more personally and shared these posts on social media—no matter how nervous it made me to do so! Sadly, blogging took a back seat during my final semester in school (summer of 2014). After graduating and planning my next big move (literally, I ended up moving across the world), I re-launched with a brand new site and a whole new sense of focus.

What do you hope to achieve with your blog?

My ultimate goal is for my blog to be a platform for positivity, growth, and connection. I want my humble internet abode to inspire others to truly live their life, chase their dreams, and to enjoy the (many) plot twists along the way.

Where you afraid to begin your blogging journey?

I definitely was afraid when I first decided to create my blog. The idea of putting my thoughts out there for people to read and judge still gets to nervous sometimes! But the warm fuzzy feelings I get when I am creating something and expressing myself trump the feelings of fear every time, which is what keeps me going. Over the years, my blog has changed from focusing solely on music and food to being more personal posts about my life, travel, and inspiration. Because my ultimate goal is to be a full-time creative entrepreneur, I'm always trying to learn as much as I can about running a success online space. This year, I've taken a blogging e-course called Bright Eyed and Blog Hearted by Rachel MacDonald and learned so tricks and tools to use.

What do you imagine your blog will be like next year at this time?

This time next year, my goal is to be maintaining a thriving community/ tribe and providing useful content to them. I plan to also have launched services and online resources which will help me reach my ultimate goal of turning my blog into a profitable creative business.

How has blogging changed your life?

Blogging has enabled me to connect with amazing people that I would’ve never met otherwise. These connections are everything and being able to watch/participate (even if it’s just virtually) in their journey is incredibly inspiring. Blogging has also been an awesome way to document my own evolution. It’s easy to forget how far you’ve come but my online space provides me the ability to travel back and appreciate how far I’ve come. Blogging keeps me inspired to continue creating and working towards creating the life of my dreams.

I want to give a BIG thank you to Melody for blogging here today! She is an amazing person, and I hope you all can just soak up all of this happiness that she protrudes. Please don't forget to check out her blog and let her know that you found her via Danyell Bailey's Blog--I'm sure she'd love that!

Organizing Your Social Media for the New Year

There are so many social networks out there--Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, Periscope, Instagram--and the list goes on and on. In this online world we are constantly trying to market ourselves, reach a larger audience, and take on what's trendy and new. These social networks can be great, but as more pile up it appears that our attention is spread thinly to all of these new platforms. The New Year is a perfect time for a social media clean out.

It's time to dust out your accounts, sweep up your old tweets, and reclaim your three month old profile pictures. As the New Year approaches a lot of us are making new resolutions and hoping to create new habits. One habit that I'm hoping to achieve this coming year is the ability to fine tune and focus on a particular set of social media accounts.

Say goodbye to all of those networks that you signed up for and never used. By forcing yourself to spread your attention thin across all of these platforms, you are not living up to the possible potential you could have on one particular network.

It's not as easy as it sounds though. For me, social media seems like my life--and in a sense, it is. I've created this business for myself where I attempt to master all platforms and teach others how to do the same. But mastering a platform and deciding if its the right one for you are two different things. Just because you understand how a social media platform works, doesn't mean that you should market through it.

Think about it: is this social media network where my audience is? Are the people that I want to reach out to using this network? If you answered no to those questions, then maybe its time to shut down that social media account.

Now that you've whittled down the amount of networks you are using, the next step is to clean out your content. Here are a few tips for taking control and organizing your social networks for this New Year.

Change up your profile pictures.

Profile pictures become very static for a lot of businesses. Maybe its time to change it up. By giving yourself a fresh face for this New Year you will allow your social media to look clean and new again.

Update your bio.

This is another one of those things that becomes very static. A lot of times we haven't even changed our biographies on our social media sites since the first day that we made the account. Take this time to review what your bio is saying about you or your brand. Is it still relevant? Do you have something fresh and new to say?

Study your analytics.

This is my favorite part of the New Year. I review all of the posts that I had previously put on my social networks and figure out what worked and what didn't. This is an excellent thing to do all through out the year, but by paying close attention to what worked particularly in 2015, you can make 2016 shine even more!

Start scheduling.

If you don't use a scheduling tool for your social networks then I would suggest making the New Year your time to experiment with some. There are amazing free scheduling tools available that can alleviate so much of your stress. I love using Hootsuite to plan ahead and make sure that I can keep a consistent presence on all social network sites. The sooner you start scheduling your posts, the easier the New Year will seem.

Are you planning on doing a New Year's cleanse on your social media sites? Let me know how you declutter your social media networks in the comment section below!

5 Reasons You Should Be Prepping Your Blog Post Ahead of Time

I'm sitting here, a week before I plan to have this post go live, drafting out my notes, editing the pictures that I want to use, and making sure that all of my social network posts are ready to go. I like working ahead of time because it saves time in the long run, reduces my stress levels, keeps me on a schedule, boosts my productivity, and gives me plenty of time for all of the other necessary blog tasks that I'm doing on the daily.

And I'm not the only one. Bloggers all around will tell you that finding a method that works for you is the difference between a successful blogging business and a personal past time. While prepping ahead of time might not exactly be what works for you, it is what works for me. And I want to share with you my reasons why you should at least give this method a try.

1. It saves time.

Sundays. That's when I attempt to finish up all my blog posts for the upcoming week and make sure that everything is ready to go. Doing this on a weekend as I sit on the couch and binge watch "Once Upon a Time" on Netflix saves me time during the week. I don't have to worry about scheduling time in between classes on a busy Tuesday to make sure that my Newsletter is ready to go, or spend hours on Thursday rummaging through emails looking for all of the correspondence with my upcoming Blogger Series posts.

Working ahead, and having at least a plan and a draft ready to go before the actual date of publish, saves me so much time in the long run. I can feel confident that I won't have to rush in the future, stress about getting my posts done and up, or missing the publish date that I had planned for.

2. Reduces your stress.

So now that I've got all of my posts drafted for the upcoming week, I can literally take a sigh of relief. It reduces so much stress off of me to know that this blog that I love to write for is still pushing out tons of wonderful content without me having to constantly be on it or checking up on everything. When you schedule your posts ahead of time, have a plan, and create templates and drafts, you will have time to do other things, focus on stuff that you love, and not freak out about creating blog content.

All of these tips that I am sharing might make it seem like I don't enjoy writing this content; but, yet I truly do. I, like most of you, live busy lives that include jobs and families and other things besides blogging. So, reducing my stress about curating content can allow me to stress about other things--like making sure your dogs don't tear up the Christmas tree (aka what they're doing right now!!).

3. Keeps you on a schedule.

I create a blogging schedule a month in advance. Creating that schedule/editorial calendar is the first step in making sure that I am organized and stress free. But once I have that schedule, I need to make sure to act on it and stay consistent. If I miss a post because I don't make time to write it, then my entire plan for the month could be jeopardized--or even worse, I won't have time to write that post and fit it in at all.

Writing my posts in advanced and having things queued up and ready to go helps me keep to my schedule. Having a routine is good for your blog and for your readers. If your readers can know when to expect new content, they will be more likely to keep an eye out for your posts, look forward to reading your blog, and feel like they are part of a consistent community.

4. Boosts your productivity.

The reason that I like to do everything ahead of time on a Sunday is because that is the beginning of the week. This is the time for me to start fresh, get ahead, and build momentum. Having already started a week on a positive and productive note, I am more likely to continue the trend and push myself to achieve more and more.

Having that boost of productivity can simply come from taking some time to think ahead, curate some amazing content, and draft out what I plan to do for the rest of the week. Not only am I achieving the goals that I have outlined for myself, I am also making sure to tick off all of the other tasks that I need to make sure to get done on a weekly basis as well.

5. Gives you time for other tasks.

The single most important reason for me to prepare my posts in advance is that prepping ahead of time gives me time for other things. I feel like I can spend Mondays and Tuesdays and every other day of the week working on social media or house cleaning tasks that would otherwise be occupied by my need to blog. I feel as though I can come home knowing that content is already being pushed out onto my blog without me having to do anything that day. This gives me time to accomplish other necessary things and work my way towards achieving more than I ever thought I could have.

Working ahead can be a bit of a challenge for some people. And trust me, I totally understand. The first week or so is usually the worst because you feel as though you have to do double the work just to get everything ready to go. But once you make this a routine you will be able to accomplish so much more. Something as simple as prepping your blog posts ahead of time can be that one thing that pushes your online business to the next level.

Do you plan ahead and schedule things out in advance? Let me know in the comment section below. I would love to hear about all of your blog schedules and online tools that you use to stay on top of your tasks and productive.
